May 2012: Sarah Kay

This is an artist who’s inspiration is sure to extend beyond this month. Sarah Kay is a spoken word artist and her amazing-ness can be seen in the TED video above. She performed her poetry at aged 14 and was told by a girl in a hoodie that she ‘really felt that’ which is something I connect with in terms of why I perform my poetry.

She is the founder of Project V.O.I.C.E and therein lies another connection, as I am currently hoping to inspire young people through a vocal poetic expression with Shake the Dust. I showed the group of students the video below. I hope it influences their writing because I love how Kay animates the objects and gives them emotions and it is surely going to generate a whole lot of new material from me.
